Join me for the 2nd annual GirlsThinkTank Community Picnic on Sunday Oct 12th. GirlsThinkTank is a non-profit organization created by my friend Rachael. She’s a very smart woman who cares about the citizens of San Diego and knows how to get people into action around the issues facing the less fortunate in our beautiful city.

A $10 donation buys lunch for you and a person in need. You’ll enjoy a sunny afternoon in Balboa Park just before the summer ends, and you’ll have the opportunity to hear from local homeless advocates like Congressman Bob Filner and hear from a few local musicians like, Corina Rose and DJ Quist.

community picnic

I attended last year’s picnic and was blessed by the opportunity to encounter a few of our homeless neighbors in a setting that allowed me to contribute to them in a more personal and impacting way that just handing over a dollar on the street corner.

More information about the picnic is on the GirlsThinkTank website. I hope to see you there!

Sinatra '68 via Sinatra.com

My Dad has a lot of stories, one of which he recounted over dinner at Studio Diner tonight. He was born in Jalisco, Mexico in 1940, one of the youngest of 12, yes 12 kids. Son of Mexican war hero. He worked and played on the family ranch til they all decided to come back to the U.S. (family went back to Mexico during the depression). So while they spent 3 years in Tijuana getting their legal passage, my Dad shined shoes for a dime a pair…

Let’s try to make the great story of his life a little shorter and catch you up to our Sinatra moment:

Wing tips via Zappos.com

So it’s the late 60s and he’s busing tables in San Francisco. He works at a restaurant where celebrities would stop in late at night after local performances. Now if you don’t already know, Frank Sinatra was notorious for being pretty harsh. The Rat Pack didn’t mess around. On this particular night “Old blue eyes” is in the house and everyone’s on their toes. Unfortunately my Dad ended up on the wrong toes - Sinatra’s toe!!! He had approached the table, probably to gather a plate or refill a glass when he accidently stepped on Frankie’s foot. As my Dad tells it - “I immediately started apologizing, Oh excuse me Mr. Sinatra! excuse me! But Sinatra was cool about it, he just said ‘Oh no problem, it was my fault, no problem’, His foot was actually sticking out from under the table, and he had some nice, what do call them? wing-tip shoes on, so it probably didn’t hurt.”

Ha ha! I love my Dad stories and I really need to start writing them down more. I’ll probably turn this into a series of posts. Though I could probably fill a book. I’ll at least start with blog posts. So there’s more stories to come. Like when he was a kid and his brother threw a rock in his eye for knocking down an ant hill, or when he feel out of a tree and no one found him til hours later, or getting out of the army just before his company went to Vietnam…

I was going to write about web apps tonight, but I’m glad I got this down to share with you instead.

So I worked on the blog a little bit. Spent what seemed like hours updating to Wordpress 2.6, then I tried some new templates (I’m liking this one for now) and I tried to customize a bit by installing some plugins. I don’t really know how to get these things to work. I’ve already spend too much of my day working on this and I’m not in the mood to dig around in template code. I was happy with TypePad and Vox because it literally takes seconds to get my social network sites linked, add what I’m listening to, show Flickr photos, Tweet updates etc. Now I’m working with a whole new beast just because I want more control and I want my blog to appear at my own domain. Not sure if all this tweeking is worth it.

For now all I know is that I’m exhausted. Plus this old PC I work on at home is soooooooo slow it makes accomplishing anything pretty painful. So I’m done for today.

I’ll leave you with something on a lighter note: Wine Tasting with Dr. Steve Brule

This blog was up and running for a while but got sorely ignored while I tried out Typepad and Vox. While I like the easy plugins with Typepad and the social features of Vox, I really feel that I need my very own home base on the web at my own domain.

So here we are. I’ve got a basic pre-made theme running right now but I intend to make this my own as soon as I can. So for now I’ll keep pretty quite until this resembles and place I’m proud to call my home. In the mean time you can find me plenty of other places online.

Super solo shopping and dining can be a cinch.By Elaine Magee, RD, MPHWebMD FeatureJust one mouth to feed in your house? I remember those days fondly sometimes. Like when I have a hungry husband and two testy teens barking, “What’s for dinner?,” the minute I walk in the door. Or when my groceries total $200, and it’s only been a few days since my last shopping trip.I hope you’re celebrating your singleness by feeding yourself well (and by “well,” I mean with health in mind most of the time).

Many singles say it’s a challenge to shop and cook for one. Recipes are usually designed with a family in mind. You buy bread in loaves, cereal in large boxes, and eggs by the dozen. On the other hand, frozen entrees, yogurt, and some frozen desserts are available in single servings. Fruit and vegetables can also be bought by the piece instead of the pound. The grocery store truly can be a treasure trove of food opportunities for the single person. Here are 10 tips for super solo cooking and dining:
